WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT WHEN I HAVE A LAB TEST? top
Based on the laboratory test ordered by your healthcare provider, you may be required to submit a sample such as a blood test, saliva, urine, stool, or semen. Please ask your ordering healthcare provider prior to coming to the laboratory if you are unsure what test(s) are being performed, why the test needs to be done, if they have any preparatory requirements prior to the specimen collection, and when you can expect to receive your results.
DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING SPECIAL TO PREPARE FOR A LAB TEST? top
Some laboratory tests require special preparation prior to the specimen collection. This may involve fasting, dietary restrictions, and avoiding/adjusting the patient's medication dosage. Please consult with your healthcare provider to determine if any of these special preparatory steps are necessary in your case.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO A PATIENT SERVICE CENTER TO HAVE MY SPECIMEN COLLECTED? top
Once you have located a convenient Patient Service Center (PSC), you will need to bring your healthcare provider's order, a form of identification, and your insurance card with you to the PSC. If you do not have a participating insurance provider, you may be asked to pay for the services being performed upfront with cash, check, or charge.
MY CHILD NEEDS TO HAVE LAB WORK PERFORMED, MUST I ACCOMPANY THEM TO THE PATIENT SERVICE CENTER? top
CPL will perform lab work on minors with parental consent. If you are bringing a minor to a PSC and you are not the legal guardian for that minor, you must bring a notarized statement from the minor's legal guardian authorizing CPL to perform the specimen collection and testing required.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO RECEIVE TEST RESULTS? top
Depending on the testing being performed, most tests are completed and reported to your healthcare professional within 24 to 48 hours from receipt of the sample. However, more complex testing may take several days to weeks to complete. Contact your healthcare provider directly with questions regarding your results.
CAN I RECEIVE A COPY OF MY RESULTS? top
According to the Data Privacy Rule under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), patients may receive a copy of their results. However, laws in some states prohibit the releasing of results directly to the patient. Our accrediting body, the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA), requires CPL to follow State laws with regard to the reporting of results when State law is stricter. In this circumstance, CPL will not be able to release your test results to you directly; you must obtain the results from your healthcare provider.
WHO WILL REPORT MY TEST RESULTS TO ME? top
Your healthcare provider will report your lab results to you. Please do not contact CPL with questions about the interpretation or values associated with your lab test results.
